From Commencing Till Inauguration
For decades, harnessing the Rufiji River has been seen as an opportunity to unlock Tanzania’s natural potential. The original vision was not simply to generate electricity, but to use hydropower as a driver of modernization, industrial growth and improved quality of life.

Contract Award & Signature.
Elsewedy Electric and Arab Contractors enter a new chapter in hydropower with the award of the JNHPP EPC contract.
Design & Engineering Phase
Detailed engineering and design works establish the technical foundation for the project.
Mobilization
The project site is transformed from a remote location into a fully operational construction base, with access roads, camps, production facilities and supporting infrastructure.
Foundation Stone
The foundation stone is laid, marking the official beginning of construction.
River Diversion
The mighty Rufiji River is successfully diverted through the diversion tunnel, clearing the way for construction of the main dam.
Dam Completion
The main dam reaches its full design height following 723 days of continuous RCC placement.
Powerhouse Civil Works Completed
Construction of the powerhouse progresses alongside the installation of nine generating units and their associated electromechanical systems.
Transmission & Grid Integration
The project's generation infrastructure is progressively integrated with Tanzania's national electricity grid.
Reservoir Filling
The diversion system is closed and the Rufiji River begins filling the reservoir, marking the transition toward power generation.
First Unit Commissioned and Commercial Operation
The first generating unit is successfully commissioned and synchronized with the national grid, marking the beginning of power generation. The commercial operation of unit 9 kicked off.
Remaining Units Commissioned
The remaining generating units are progressively commissioned, bringing the plant closer to its full 2,115 MW capacity.
